Discover New Skills
Week 1 – Research OSHA and Electrical Safety for Sign Fabrication

Research OSHA and Electrical Safety for Sign Fabrication
Before we teach it, you find it. This week you’ll research the OSHA standards and electrical safety rules that apply directly to sign fabrication work. Come ready to discuss what you found.

Download Your Research Assignment
Click the assignment sheet below and save it to your phone or a place you can access during the week. It lists the specific topics you need to research and the questions you need to answer before Week 2.
Research OSHA 10 General Industry Basics
Look up OSHA 10 General Industry training topics. Focus on: hazard recognition, personal protective equipment (PPE), walking and working surfaces, and electrical safety basics. Write down the key rules in your own words. Use OSHA.gov, your journeyman, or other employer-approved resources.

Research Sign Shop-Specific Hazards
Think about the work environment at CN Signs. Research hazards related to: chemical exposure from paints and adhesives, power tool operation, sheet metal and sharp material handling, and low-voltage and line-voltage electrical work. Note any OSHA standard numbers you find (for example, 29 CFR 1910.303 for electrical).
Identify PPE Required for Your Role
Research what PPE is required for the tasks a Sign Specialist performs. List at least five types of PPE, the hazard each one protects against, and when you are required to wear it. Ask your journeyman what PPE is stocked and required at CN Signs.

Complete and Submit Your Research Sheet
Fill out every section of the research assignment sheet. Write in complete sentences. Submit it through this lesson before Week 2 begins. Your journeyman or supervisor will review your answers and may discuss them with you before the core lesson.
