Before you can safely use the tools of the trade, you need to know what they are and why they matter. This week, you will research the common hand and power tools used in sign fabrication shops and on installation jobsites.

Research Hand Tools Used in Sign Construction
Using shop resources, manufacturer documentation, or approved online sources, identify at least six hand tools commonly used in sign fabrication and installation. For each tool, note its name, primary function, and any safety considerations. Examples to investigate include: snips, utility knives, deburring tools, mallets, measuring tapes, and hand riveters.


Research Power Tools Used in Sign Construction
Identify at least six power tools used in the sign industry. For each tool, document its name, what it is used for in sign work, and basic safety requirements. Examples to investigate include: angle grinders, circular saws, jigsaws, drill/drivers, rotary tools, and pneumatic riveters.
Talk to Your Journeyman
Ask your assigned journeyman which tools they use most frequently on the job. Ask them to name at least two tools that a new apprentice often misuses or underestimates. Record their responses in your worksheet.
