Research Low-Voltage Wiring in Sign Systems

Research Low-Voltage Wiring in Sign Systems
Before you touch a wire, you need to understand what low-voltage wiring is, why it matters in sign fabrication, and what the rules are. This week you’ll research the fundamentals so you walk into next week’s lesson ready to learn—not just follow along.

Understand the Assignment
This week is about building your knowledge base before hands-on instruction begins. You’ll research low-voltage wiring concepts as they apply to illuminated signs—LED drivers, power supplies, Class 2 circuits, and the wiring methods used in the shop and field. Your goal is to arrive at Week 2 able to speak the language of low-voltage sign wiring.
Research Low-Voltage Wiring Fundamentals
Using the resources below, research the following topics: (1) What defines a low-voltage or Class 2 circuit and how it differs from line-voltage wiring. (2) Common low-voltage components in LED sign systems—drivers, power supplies, and LED modules. (3) Basic wire types, gauges, and color codes used in low-voltage sign wiring. (4) Safety considerations when working with low-voltage circuits in sign fabrication environments. Suggested resources: NEC Article 600 and Class 2 circuit definitions, LED driver and power supply manufacturer documentation, OSHA general electrical safety guidelines, shop manuals or reference materials provided by your journeyman.

Take Notes in Your Own Words
As you research, take written notes using your own words. Don’t copy-paste definitions—summarize what you learn. For each topic area, write at least 3–5 sentences explaining the concept and why it matters for sign work. Your notes will support your reflection and submission this week.
Talk to Your Journeyman
Ask your journeyman at least two questions based on what you’ve researched. Good starting points: ‘What’s the most common wiring mistake you see in low-voltage sign systems?’ or ‘What wire gauge do we use most often on LED channel letter jobs?’ Write down what they tell you—this real-world input is part of your research.

Complete and Submit Your Research Assignment
Download the Week 1 Research Assignment worksheet using the link below. Answer all prompts based on your research and your journeyman conversation. Submit your completed worksheet through the course platform before Week 2 begins. Incomplete or skipped submissions will delay your progression to the core lesson.
